Flagship Programme

 

The Flagship Programme facilitates secondment opportunities for African lawyers to take part in a three-month secondment programme in law offices of international law firms and corporations based in London, Paris, and Dubai. Additionally, the programme provides an academic enrichment series that incorporates training modules on various topics relevant to the African legal sector. Finally, the ILFA lawyers undergo seminars at the prestigious Oxford and Cambridge Universities.

Placements offer an annual curriculum of the most relevant parts of the participating law firms’ existing training programmes. These include the following practice areas: international arbitration, intellectual property, project finance, and sovereign debt. A wide variety of industries are covered from mining to construction, banking to oil & gas.

Flagship Secondees will be provided with:

  • Roundtrip airfare
  • Appropriate accommodation in the host city
  • Short term accommodation in London for the advanced training days & Gala dinner (for non London based secondees)
  • Airport transportation and local transportation within the host city
  • Weekly allowance 
  • Transportation to Oxford and Cambridge Universities for the enrichment days (For London based secondees only)
  • Attendance at ILFA networking events including the Annual Gala Dinner 

On commencement of placement, secondees will receive:

  • A programme induction
  • An ILFA mentor (buddy) within the host organisation
  • ILFA training sessions hosted/delivered by sponsor organisations
  • ILFA seminars at the prestigious Oxford and Cambridge Universities (London Secondment Placements Only)

Applications for ILFA's Flagship Programme for placements in London, Paris, & Dubai are open annually during the first quarter of the year (January-March).


Programme Design

Advanced Training

Technical training is an essential part of the programme. This is a collaborative effort with participating firms and corporations. Sessions are developed and conducted by hosting firms and corporations to cover topics and practice areas such as: international arbitration, intellectual property, project finance, and sovereign debt. A wide variety of industries are covered from mining to construction, banking to oil & gas. Topics are determined based on the backgrounds of the incoming cohort as well as relevancy to the African market.

Professional Development

The Programme provides secondees the opportunity to meet, exchange information, and share experiences with lawyers from various African countries. Through conferences, shared accommodation, networking receptions, meetings, and seminars; secondees expand their perspectives on their work and on global issues facing the African continent. Engaging with one another as well as colleagues at work placements and citywide legal professional events are all key components to enrich the overall professional skills and knowledge.

Oxbridge Seminars

This is a two-day academic seminar organised by Oxford and Cambridge Universities. The Seminars are coordinated and led by selected members of the ILFA Advisory Board who have affiliations with the universities. Topics are presented within the African context and vary each year.

Annual Welcome Drinks

The annual welcome drinks is the official welcome event. Every year, we welcome our new ILFA cohort to the programme with drinks at a venue in London. The event is a great opportunity for all ILFA affiliates to be introduced to the new group of lawyers. 

Annual Gala Dinner

The annual Gala Dinner is one of ILFA’s annual events attended by 200 guests and serves as its main fundraiser. It has become a staple event within the African legal calendar. This is an African themed, black-tie seated dinner with entertainment and dancing. All participating firms, corporations, and partners as well as invited guests support and attend the event.

Closing Event

After successfully completing the programme, secondees are presented with a certificate at the closing event in London followed by drinks and networking.
